This work examines the origins of the cult of the Virgin Mary, asking at what point they can be identified. There is a range of answers, from the Catholic one that Mary was considered to be the Blessed Virgin in her own lifetime, to a more sceptical one that the cult of Mary developed only when the pagan goddess cults were suppressed.
