This is a chronological survey of four centuries of Amsterdam cityscapes, from the 17th century to the 20th century. It provides a colourful overview of locations that have disappeared and those that have stood the test of time. The paintings cover the time was Amsterdam was at the centre of world trade and follow its change throughout the centuries. Artists included in the book include Jacob van Ruisdael, Meindert Hobbema, Jan van der Heyden, the Berkheyde brothers, Whistler, Monet and Liebermann.
