Publisher's Synopsis
The papers assembled in this volume were originally delivered at a seminar on philosophy and Roman society held at the University of Oxford, 1985-1987. The participants of this interdisciplinary seminar included philosophers, historians and classical scholars.;Most of the papers are concerned with the intellectual life of the first century BC as, in the editors' opinion, the century was a formative one and it is well documented. Lucretius, Posidonius, Antiochus of Ascalon, Cicero and Plutarch are among the thinkers and writers examined.
