Paul, a shy boy, found solace in the clubs of the gay community, where drinking was the norm, and commitment to relationships was rare. Drinking and driving led Paul to prison. That, and three victims he sent to the hospital for head injuries. The judge would not give the MADD community the seven years of imprisonment they asked for, any more than he would give him the year on house arrest Paulas side was asking. Paulas first prison visit takes him to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where one of the worst prison riots took place. The Hispanic gangs and the Aryan Brotherhood led the majority of these prisons. Paul had to figure out how to stay clean from trouble, how to keep sexual predators at bay, and how to keep his mouth shut.
