In common usage, "Small Greek domestic dog" refers to a breed of dog that was developed in Greece and shares this country's penchant for miniature canine companions with their human owners. The name could be used to describe any of several small Greek dog breeds or to describe a variety of mixed-breed dogs that are widespread in Greece.
- The Greek Hound (Ellinikos Ichnilatis), a small to medium-sized breed with a reputation for hunting, is one example of a dog breed native to Greece. The "Cretan Hound," also known as the "Kritikos Ichnilatis," is a small to medium-sized hound breed that originated on the Greek island of Crete.
In addition to these varieties, Greece is home to a wide variety of small domestic dogs who are nonetheless much-loved pets and reliable workers despite lacking a universally recognized breed name.
