Publisher's Synopsis

Ralph Roister Doister is a comedic play written by Nicholas Udall in the 16th century. It is considered the first English comedy and tells the story of a wealthy, but foolish man named Ralph Roister Doister who is in love with a woman named Dame Custance. Despite his attempts to win her over, Dame Custance is not interested in him and instead is courted by a scholar named Matthew Merrygreek. Ralph enlists the help of his friends to try and win her over, but their plans backfire and they end up embarrassing themselves. The play is full of witty dialogue, humorous situations, and satire of the social norms of the time. It is a classic example of early English literature and has influenced many comedic works since its publication. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
