Reading 2000 is a varied five level language development programme for the junior and early middle school years.;Listening, speaking, reading and writing are closely interwoven and activities relating to these aspects of language have been integrated into each level of the programme.;The components at each level include core readers, copymasters, topic readers, book study guides, teacher's guide, partners and playscripts.;Together these provide an organized and systematic approach to covering the National Curriculum and Scottish Attainment Targets and Programmes of Study for English whilst at the same time allowing teachers to use their expertise and knowledge of individual children.;The copymasters provide optional material for consolidation and practice of skills and reading techniques introduced through the core readers. They offer opportunities for re-reading, further study and self-checking of comprehension and recall. They also provide practical reading activities which involve "following instructions" , word study, writing etc. A pupil reading record allows pupils to monitor their own progress through the programme. There are practice activities which reinforce group teaching as well as activities that children can pursue independently.;The material can be used for informal assessment of selected skills including oral reading at earlier stages and silent reading/comprehension at later stages.
