Publisher's Synopsis

Sara Agnes Rice Pryor (1830-1912) was an American writer and community activist in New York City. She was born in Virginia and moved North after the American Civil War with her husband and family to rebuild their life. Her husband was a former politician and Confederate general who set up a law firm in New York, and the couple became prominent among a number of influential southerners in the North. In addition to her civic duties, which included setting up a home for women and children in need, she became a productive writer. She used the journals she had kept before and during the war as the basis for her two memoirs published in the early 1900s. First published in 1904, this work is reprinted from the revised and enlarged edition of 1908. Illustrated with photographs.
