Publisher's Synopsis
August 1960 and Vice President Nixon is riding the campaign trail. Black River Falls, Iowa is to be one of his next stops and the whole town is talking. Meanwhile, preacher John Muldaur claims that he may be the target of a papist assassination plot. Sam McCain, sometime private investigator, is unconvinced, but can't deny it when the preacher drops dead at his own altar. With Nixon's visit a week away this murder must be cleared up fast. McCain is up against a heap of local prejudices, unpleasant family secrets, another corpse and a cage full of rattlesnakes.
