In the present volume I have made extensive use of the valuable material thus. Provided by the schools of Germany and France. I have endeavoured to give account of the most recent facts that have been brought forward in connection with this wide-spread affection, and the m'ost recent theories that have been expressed as to its nature and relationships.
At the same time I must, in justice to myself, remark that the greater part of the material in this volume is the result of my own investigations into this disease.
