The research in this volume examines the attitudes of probation service staff to the selection and suitability of offenders for CSOs and the pressures and constraints on these officers in the decision-making process. The author suggests that social workers and probation officers are poorly prepared for their role in the new decision making. The study shows some evidence of discrimination operating within the system which will link with the current concern with disadvantage and race in the criminal justice process.
