Mendes had been posting covers of radio-friendly pop songs for about a year, mostly created right in his bedroom. He had decided it was time to show the world what he could do. The contest rules were simple. The song "Say Something" was blowing up on YouTube with covers by young artists. Ryan Seacrest, a television and radio personality, gathered some of the best covers and put them up on his website for voting. The fans would decide the winner. Mendes had been creating YouTube covers from his home, but he knew this was his chance to get noticed in a big way.
