New Zealander David Geraghty taught English and travelled in Japan for three years in the late 1990s. This text recounts his travels with his neighbour Nobuyuki ("Nobby") and his wife Hiroe. In addition to giving his impressions of Tokyo and Kyoto, Geraghty describes numerous trips into the mountainous rural areas where shrines to the local forest gods are still maintained.
