Zimmerman (1728-95) was a Swiss philosophical writer, naturalist and physician. The first part of Solitude was published in 1756, whilst the second part was written in 1784-5. It made a great impression in Germany when it first appeared and was soon translated into almost every European language. This English translation was published in 1840 and includes a biographical sketch of the author.
