Ten days after the changeling, Desmerelda, caused every child on Earth to become 11 years old and everyone without an Internet Implant to be spirited away to the underworld, Sophie is lost. Her dad is gone, school is closed, her mum has taken in Sophie's grief-stricken cousin, Clara, and is making no effort to help with Sophie's now 11-year-old sister, Lizzie. Not wanting to tackle her own demons inside her because of what she caused, Sophie is very relieved when distractions come - her former teacher, Miss Sissins, and head of Shadow, Alton King, have returned with reports of an amazing discovery by Sophie's newest friend, Kingsley. Sophie can't help but wonder whether King has an ulterior motive for a vision he starts setting out though, which Sophie believes would only benefit him and put lots of others in potentially mortal danger.
