In the year - I was sent to join my regiment in Egypt, but was detained in Portsmouth by adverse winds; - that brilliant campaign had ended ere I embarked for Malta.
I have already stated that I was a tolerable linguist, and was therefore requested, as a particular favour, to take charge of a Russian lady who was going out to join her husband at Malta, where he held a high civil situation.
