Arthur is preparing a great feast in Caerleon to celebrate his son Mordred's coming of age. It is a magnificent occasion coinciding with teh great feast of Pentecost, and Mordred and others are being made knights. The whole ceremony is celebrated with the customary splendour of King Arthur's court, and Guenevere knows that she and Arthur are conveying the usual impression of a glittering couple at the height of their powers. But there are tensions below the surface known only to a few.
