My part of the work has been but small compared to the great labour of love lavished upon it by Mr. Carrington, who has spared neither time nor money to insure its completeness and enhance its interest. He has not only inspected and described the Plate brought to the various centres, but in many cases has travelled up and down the county to see pieces not so brought, or to satisfy himself as to points of interest in Plate previously exhibited. He has also carefully typed the schedules for the printer, verifying and retouching the proof sheets. Of his skill and technical knowledge it would be an impertinence to speak; but for his diligent care, and his kindly patience with a mere amateur like myself, I must record my most grateful thanks. I should very much like, as I intended, to have Shown many more Of the makers' marks, several of them hitherto unpublished, but time and expense alike prohibit any extension of the work. The photographs have been selected with a view to exhibit the widest variety of styles, as well as the most valuable examples, both of ecclesiastical and of secular Plate, and therefore many, rightly valued, which exhibit no uncommon features, are not shown. The coats of arms have been given, where procurable without additional expense, partly from interest in connection with the history of the county, partly as showing the wide divergence of design and execution at various periods.
