Feeling cursed, suffering from depression and insomnia, buffeted by dark visions and dreams, Pero de Alava forsakes his fiancé and best friend in Capua to recklessly embark on a suicidal quest. Cursing God, he christens himself a scapegoat, a warrior bearing upon him whatever curse it is that ails him to save his people from the wrath of their enemies.
Little does Pero know that there are larger forces working around him, forces larger than his enemies in Parthenope and the throne of the Holy Roman Emperor.
