Mr. Darwin, indeed, does not profess to treat of the origin of life.

Science as yet throws no light on the (far higher) problem of the essence or origin of life. Origin of Species, p. 568. His endeavour is, taking life for granted, to prove that all livmg things have come, chie?y by a law which he calls natural selection, from, at most, a few primordial living types.
