"This is the plant and ecosystem part of a proposed three-part series to celebrate the first 100 years of research at Barro Colorado Island (BCI), Panama, which celebrates its centennial in 2023-2024. BCI has inspired more than 3,200 scientific publications during its first century, ensuring that BCI has the best studied biota on Earth. The rich legacy of research on Barro Colorado spans multiple disciplines, which we propose to address in three interrelated volumes (or sets of volumes), all edited by STRI staff scientists. Each volume includes review articles summarizing the contributions of BCI-based research to a discipline and highlighting directions for future research. This series will serve as a state-of-knowledge for tropical biology in 2023 and as a resource for future generations of scientists worldwide.
