Publisher's Synopsis

This is the story of Clan Grant, one of Scotland's oldest and most successful clans. From humble beginings Clan Grant became one of the most successful and resilient Scottish Clans and, arguably, the predominany Clan in the Eastern Central Highlands. This was due to their use of both the sword and the pen, something very few other clans were able to achieve.
In the late 13th century and early 14th century, they were instrumental in defending the independence of Scotland as a separate nation, first supporting William Wallace and then Robert the Bruce. They also attached themselves early on to the Scottish Monarchy, particulalry the Stuart dynasty. This was in direct contrast to other great clans, such as the Camerons and the MacDonalds, who spent much of their time and energy fighting against domination from Edinburgh.
The heartland of Clan Grant is Strathspey adjacent the magnificent Cairngorm Mounrains, south of Inverness. Later on they acquired the lands of Urquhart and Glenmoriston on the north side of Loch Ness and then territory around the towns of Elgin and Forres along the southern shore of the Moray Firth.
During the Jacobite Rebellions of the late 17th and 18th century the Clan generally sided with the British Government, however, the clan was split and a significant number of Grants fought as Jacobite rebels and suffered as a result.
The story of Clan Grant ends with the Diaspora which saw them immigrate all over the world and contribute to the development of many nations. The Grants are truly a Great Clan.
