Publisher's Synopsis

Edith Nesbit (1858-1924) was an English author and poet who wrote or collaborated on over 60 works of children's literature. She was also a political activist and co-founded the Fabian Society, a socilaist organisation later affiliated to the Labour Party. Among her best-known children's books are The Story of the Treasure Seekers (1899) and The Wouldbegoods (1901), both featuring the Bastable family, and The Railway Children (1906) which was filmed in 1970. Nesbit also wrote for adults, including a number of novels, short stories and four collections of horror stories. Scottish graphic artist and illustrator Harold Robert Millar (1869-1942), best known for his illustrations for children books and fantasy literature, had an extensive working relationship with E. Nesbit and this edition includes his original illustrations for the book throughout. The story relates the adventures of two impoverished children who inherit the decrepit Arden Castle and search for the long-lost family fortune which will help them rebuild it. With the assistance of the magical Mouldiwarp they travel back in time to earlier periods of English history searching for clues. First published in 1908.
