Newbury has sunk further into his opium addiction, fuelled in part by what he sees as Veronica's betrayal and his inability to confront her on the matter of her relationship with the Queen. However, when the body of a well known criminal turns up, Bainbridge and Veronica track Newbury down and get him to help them with the case.
