In the second book in this series, Derek makes a big mistake when he becomes curious and climbs up on a boy's cone at a carnival to taste cotton candy. The boy is frightened and screams, and his father chases after Derek and his family. They barely escape with their lives. Derek's Uncle Jasper is very disappointed in his nephew. He explains that now the boy will be frightened of ants and hate them. Derek feels ashamed. He knows that his father, Antavius, who was a hero in their small ant village, would have been unhappy with his son's actions. Derek vows at this point to find another boy and make it up to him.Derek has special abilities and talents like his father. Not only is he physically strong, but can understand the languages of many creatures including humans. The village council has asked Derek to go on a mission to save the village and find another Feeding Place for them. Derek's father had gone on a similar mission but never returned. Derek wants to find his father and together find another location for the ant village.Will Derek be able to make it up to a boy? On his journey, Derek meets Evan who is facing many problems including the loss of his brother, loneliness, and being picked on and challenged by a bully in school. In this adventure, Derek and Evan work together to try to overcome these issues and form a great friendship.
