Publisher's Synopsis
When Sally White began collecting information about her family, her father passed to her a manuscript written by her Grandmother. Born in 1897, Gertrude White and her sisters spent time in institutions as young girls, after being abandoned by their mother. Even when they were finally reunited, their lives did not improve dramatically. With her sisters all working away from home, Getrude went North with her mother, living and working in Yorkshire. Evening classes enabled her to return to London with her mother to work with her sisters in an office. The manuscript ends in 1915, after Gertrude met her future husband, Duncan.
