Vidcd for the execution of this great func tion of the Church, the evangelizing of the heathen. On referring to the publications that were constantly issuing from the press, it was found that, instead of supplying the want of information that was felt, they served only to increase a sense of it. It was impossible, on reading them, not to be struck with the narrowness and unfairness with which most of them were written. On the one hand, Roman Catholics clearly did injustice to the missionary efforts of Protestants; while, on the other hand, the treatises and writings of many Protestants seemed composed under the impression that no such thing as Roman Catholic missions existed; that, at least before the Reformation, the design of evangelizing the world was a thing unheard of that it had been reserved for this age almost to commence the work, for which a new theory of missions, new methods, and machinery, and system of action were to.
