M Y tale is at once an allegory of the Church and an allegory of the Soul. I frankly disclaim anything original in it, except perhaps its setting and choice of material. Certainly, the main idea has been the common property of the Church in all ages, - ever since, indeed, men thought of the Christian life as a voyage and pilgrimage, with its adventure and its goal. It may even be that many have used the parable as I now do, although their work is unknown to me. Should that be so, I trust I have not entrenched on their labors.
In the details of my story, I have tried to make the past live before my readers in a homely way. If I have succeeded at all in doing so, my reward is with me.
Finally, I have written only for those who possess the divine gift of imagination and are young in heart.
