Excerpt from The Question of the Vote by Ballot: Plainly Stated, and Objections Fully Examined and Refuted, in a Letter to John Hodgson, Esq., M. P
The following detailed examination of the question of the vote BY ballot is of course intended for the public. I am fully of Opinion that the more it is investigated the more firmly based on truth it will be found to be and so deeply am I con vinced of this, that I have no hesitation in saying, that if the seeds which I sow shall appear to have fallen amongst stones by the way-side and to have perished, let the result be at once attributed to the unskilfulness and inefficiency of the cultivator of truth, and not to any defect in that which he wishes to see ?ourish. In examining the question of the propriety of employ ing Ballot in the election of Members of Parliament, the plain way seems to be first, to state the efi'ects which are wanted to be produced. Next, to give the reasons shewing that the Vote by Ballot must produce these desirable effects, and in the most complete way possible and lastly, to anatomise and refute the various arguments, objections, and cavils which have been ar rayed against the Vote by Ballot, to shew that they are devoid of foundation in reason and fact, and frequently contradictory, and altogether worthless.
