Publisher's Synopsis

Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) was one of the most celebrated authors produced by Scotland. He achieved fame with novels of adventure such as Treasure Island and Kidnapped and with the metaphysical thriller The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. After contracting tuberculosis he settled with his wife and stepson in Samoa, where he spent the last years of his short life. This selection illustrates his attractive personality with observations taken from his novels, essays and poems, and, above all, from his wide-ranging correspondence.
