Twelve-year-old Dusty hates unreasonable rules, criticism, and his stepfather. Heas a cute little guy, smart, small for his age, with intense blue eyes that convey a quiet sincerity. But thereas nothing shy about him. He wants only to feel successful and be appreciated. In a dream, he is told that he and his friends must find the lost Shards of Athenia to thwart the goals of an egotistical tyrant. Their lives change abruptly when Dustyas dream comes true. Along with the farm cat, they are teleported to Crystalyte, a medieval planet. Dustyas unhappiness is replaced with a fight for survival as they battle death, confront an unfriendly army, seek a cantankerous wizard, and deal with a treacherous guide. There is a smidgen of romance; they get help from ancient prophecy and an antique auto-harp, and they try to survive a personal confrontation with their egotistical tormenter.
