When, in 1884, Mr. Kruger published the cor dial invitation of the Transvaal Government to immigrants bringing capital and enterprise, gold mines were already worked in the Trans vaal, and the burghers were more than willin g to sell their mines to farmers. At that time the country was in a bad way financially.
