The authors have worked with consultants in many trusts in addressing the difficult and often complex problem of consultant appraisal. This publication responds to the uncertainty among clinicians about the collection of evidence for the purpose of appraisal and revalidation. As more is learned about effective appraisal and revalidation the demand for evidence about medical practice and performance grows. The questions now being asked include "What specific evidence is required?"; "How much evidence should be collected?" and "How should this evidence be interpreted?".
