The Wolf's Long Howl

Stanley Waterloo (1846-1913) was an American newspaperman, editor, newspaper owner, and author of both fiction and non-fiction. He was born in St. Clair County, Michigan and after attending the University of Michigan he moved to Chicago to study law but abandoned his studies to begin a career in journalism. In 1871, after the Great Chicago Fire, he relocated to St. Louis, Missouri where he acquired a proprietorship interest in the Evening Journal. Over the next dozen years he worked on various Missouri papers, later moving to St. Paul, Minnesota where he began a newspaper called The Day. He then returned to Chicago to work in an editorial capacity on the Chicago Tribune, during which time he was twice president of the Chicago Press Club, before dedicating himself to writing full-time. His first novel, A Man and A Woman was published in 1892 and sold over 100,000 in six months. His work was well-received in the UK, making him one of the first American authors to sell well there. His best-known work is The Story of Ab: A Tale of the Time of the Caveman (1897). The Wolf's Long Howl is a collection of 21 short stories first published together in 1899, many of which focus on the lives of people who find themselves in unfortunate circumstances, often in a rural setting.
