There have been wars, and there will be wars. Iraq and Afghanistan were our wars. There Was a War gives testimony to the wreckage of these wars as a generation was baptized into new existence. There is never a back button, pause, or time before. Now, there is only after, and how we deal with that after that will define who we believe ourselves and the world to be as we oscillate between trained hate, hurting, resilient love and, for the rest of our lives, healing and the search for hope. Married at 18 to an infantry Marine in 2004, war has been the ever present constant in my adult life; from wife to unlikely caregiver, I have lived for 11 years the life of the homefront. I cannot remember a time when the happenings of the world were inconsequential to me. I and my peers will forever have sand burrowed into our pores. This book of poetry starts at the beginning and journeys through our (my husband, myself, and our friends') years of war and after.
