The first story is interesting enough, but the second one struck me as greatly lacking that special 'something' that makes Algernon Blackwood's writings so great. All was redeemed, however, in the glorious tale spun in the third story of the book. Gripping, fantastical, and unexpected - this is what makes Blackwood so great. I can't wait to crack open the next three John Silence stories.
