Centuries have passed since the miraculous alloy shamaskite crashed to Earth in the form of shimmering meteorites. The advent of sunstone brought immense energy sources, the awakening of psychic abilities-and the planet-ravaging cataclysm forever after known as the Rending. Having fled the Earth, humanity has colonized Venus and Mars. Now the two planets look towards the outer system-and to each other-as the pinch of resources and living space begins to rear its angry head. The Six Cities of Venus, drifting in their world's deadly atmosphere, plumb the psionic arts and tinker with perfecting their hothouse existence. The Aresian League, dozens of nations large and small, war amongst each other for land and resources as Mars' population, artificially boosted by cloning and uplifts, strains against the limits of the Red Planet-and eyes Venus' technologies. And Earth, under the care of living androids that call themselves Guardians, has been regenerating through terraforming efforts and genetic manipulation; now greenery cloaks the remnants of the ancient Terran nations. Far from baring its throat to the threat of Martian conquest, Venus has set its finest psi-engineers to the task of creating Gemini: linked fighting pairs, man and machine, with vast psychic skill geared towards combat. But when the prototype pair flees towards Earth, they unwittingly help put in motion one of Mars' plans-and Venus may not remain the League's only target for much longer. Mars is mobilizing, and there is not much time. The Venusian people need their wayward warriors back and are driven to retrieve them, no matter the cost, and no matter the ire of Earth's mechanical protectors. But the greatest danger of all may lie within their own ranks.
