In the early days of the pandemic, Lana Reid enters her library to fix the WiFi. Toby Nichols lies dead on the floor. A confirmed heart attack, the library's grandfather clock--which Nichols had kept running--is missing.
Horse, a sarcastic and highly intelligent teacher forced into retirement the prior year, is rescued from a slow descent into the bottle by the pandemic, where he is recruited to teach fourth grade. In the context of other events, the missing clock is of little concern to anyone. Struggling with self-doubt and seeming obsolescence, Horse becomes fixated, following the trail down into a Grace Haven he was unaware of even after thirty years of teaching its children.
