Publisher's Synopsis
Walter Scott and the Border Minstrelsy is a book written by Andrew Lang, a Scottish writer and literary critic. The book explores the life and works of Sir Walter Scott, a Scottish novelist, poet, and historian who is considered one of the most influential writers of the 19th century. Specifically, Lang examines Scott's involvement with the Border Minstrelsy, a collection of traditional Scottish ballads and songs that Scott helped to popularize in the early 19th century. The book provides a detailed analysis of Scott's contributions to the Border Minstrelsy, including his editing of the collection and his own original compositions in the style of the traditional ballads. Lang also explores the historical context of the Border Minstrelsy, tracing its roots back to the medieval period and its influence on Scottish culture and literature. Throughout the book, Lang offers insights into Scott's life and personality, drawing on a wealth of primary sources including Scott's own letters and journals. He also examines the critical reception of Scott's work, both during his lifetime and in the years since his death. Overall, Walter Scott and the Border Minstrelsy is a comprehensive study of one of Scotland's most beloved literary figures, and a fascinating exploration of the rich cultural heritage of the Scottish Borders. As to the character of Sir Walter Scott, I have proved, I hope, that he worked on a copy of the ballad which was not the Elliot version, or the Sharpe copy; so that this copy may have represented the Scotts as taking the leading part; while for the reasons given, it is apparently earlier than the Elliot version--cannot, at least, be proved to be later--and is topographically the more correct of the two. I have given antique examples of the same sort of perversions in Otterburn. If I am right, Colonel Elliot's charge against Scott lacks its base. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
