Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Water Baptism: Neither a Sacrament Nor an Ordinance

I feel that some apology is required for putting into circula tion the accompanying pamphlet. Had I not had reason to believe that the subject of it was engaging the serious atten tion of many of the younger members of the Society to which I belong, I should not have thought it at all worth while to introduce it to their notice.

I have long doubted whether the writings of the early Friends on this subj ect, -however well calculated they may have been to meet the objections raised against their views in their days, - are calculated to satisfy enquiring minds in the present day. I have believed, therefore, that it might be helpful to a few who have been unsettled on this point, to know some of the arguments by which one, who was many years ago as much unsettled as any of them, has come to feel perfectly at rest upon it.

But whilst I have had chiefly in view those of my own Society, I hope also that what I have written may not be without service to some others.
