Publisher's Synopsis

The title comes from John McCrae's famous poem 'In Flanders Fields'. The compiler and writer of the introduction is David Roberts, author of the two important war poetry anthologies Out In The Dark and Minds At War. David also runs the warpoetry.co.uk website, a leading source of information about the poetry of WWI. Many of the poems will be well known, but We Are The Dead also includes a number of lesser-known poems, included because they are of exceptional quality or illustrate an important aspect of the Great War experience. In addition to poems by British poets, there are poems by Irish, Canadian and Australian poets, and a selection in translation from French and German. The book contains 120 poems and a similar number of paintings. Besides the six-page introduction, there is a complete list of poet and artist biographies and an index of first lines at the end of the book. As well as paintings by the official British, Canadian and Australian war artists, We Are The Dead includes paintings by other artists who witnessed the conflict, all specially chosen to complement the poems, and many rarely seen since 1918.
