He has had opportunity to visit every place of importance along the seapeoast, and has made extended excursions in many of the maritinm districts. He has studied and reduced to writing two of the leading languages of the country, and has enjoyed, in these various ways, more than ordinary advantages for making hirnself' acquainted with the actual condition of the people. He claims for his book the merit of being a faithful and unpretending reeord of African society.
