What Americans Believe presents a dialogue among a group of university students who are passionately interested in American political ideas. The students are fictitious, but the issues are real. They concern the different frameworks of ideas that form the background to much of our political debate. Starting from different points of view - conservative, liberal, libertarian, and Catholic - the students offer arguments for all of us to consider. The goal of the book is not to decide which view is correct, but to clarify ideas and to provide readers with materials they can use to reach their own conclusions.
