A proslavery man turned Underground Railroad operator, and now a wounded Civil War veteran turned war correspondent, Henry E.Wing volunteers to cross enemy lines to carry a crucial message from General U. S. Grant to President Abraham Lincoln during the bleak days of the Wilderness Campaign. After thrilling adventures-including capture by Confederates and almost being hanged as a spy by War Secretary Stanton-Henry meets Lincoln and his cabinet at night. The moving climax comes when Herny gives President Lincoln the personal message from General Grant.
Henry Wing later becomes a Methodist minister and is sent to Fairfield, Iowa, where he reunites a congregation split over slavery and builds a magnificent new church in 1877.
