When her husband Gordon retires from the Merchant Navy and buys White Oaks guesthouse, Judy Harcourt has mixed feelings. Just as they are beginning to realise what they have taken on, Martin is called back into service for four months, leaving Judy to deal with a rundown guesthouse and the imminent arrival of paying guests. Aided by the redoubtable Mavis, Judy copes with visiting divers, hikers and morris men, a disappearing dog, a male 'chambermaid' and a love-lorn next door neighbour, before Gordon returns in time for their daughter's wedding to find a thriving business and a host of new friends.
