The year is 1668 and a Stuart king sits on the English throne. Peace has returned to the Shires. Tom Peck has experienced the traumas of Edgehill. In the English civil war, as a parliamentarian he fought on the wrong side, under the wrong banner, and now his world is about to erupt. Revolution and civil war are once again casting long shadows over the English countryside. Reluctantly, Tom and his son William are being asked to take sides again in a game of deceit being played out between two monarchs. William Peck is forced to go where human life is judged by the gravel of the auctioneer's hammer. In search of a lasting freedom he is confronted by bigotry and greed. Death is the only release he expected, until he strikes up a friendship with Thomas, a black slave who gives him hope for the future.
