In civil life he had always said his prayers and they had done him good too, in a way. When he first came into the army he kept up the habit deliberately and very self consciously at first, expecting to be laughed at, but in a very little while they took no notice. He was not persecuted because he prayed and being ignored he gave it up, not all at once. He prayed after he went to bed, but then one day he forgot.
