The Scapegoat was Jocelyn Brooke's first novel, published in 1948. It is set in the Kentish countryside. If he were better known the term 'Brookeland' might have been coined to describe that part of Kent that he returned to repeatedly in his autobiographical fiction, a landscape he made uniquely his own, creating a sort of youthful Elysium imbued with homoerotic longing.
