Publisher's Synopsis
Disorder strikes during a celebratory ballgame in Chichen Itza for the Mayan ruler Pakal's birthday. Xóchitl's longtime friend has been taken prisoner in the fighting and forced to play a rigged game where the losers will be sacrificed to the gods. Before blood can be drawn the young Toltec queen is able to negotiate a deal on her ineffective husband's behalf, but it will undoubtedly lead in many deaths. The Toltecs and Chichimecas had pulled the Mayans out to the highlands for battle, but not all goes according to plan. Will Xóchitl be able to help the refugees flocking to the ruins of her Téotihuacán camp, or get punished by her husband's misguided interference?
